What Are Scale Insects?
Scale insects are small, sap-feeding insects that attach themselves to trees and shrubs. Many species produce a protective outer covering that looks like a small bump, shell, or waxy spot on the plant.
This protective covering helps shield them from predators and environmental conditions. It also makes them more difficult to manage once populations become established.
In central New Jersey landscapes, several types of scale insects are commonly found on ornamental trees and shrubs. Some of the more frequently seen species include:
- Magnolia scale on magnolia trees
- Euonymus scale on euonymus and sometimes pachysandra
- Oystershell scale on shrubs and shade trees such as lilac, dogwood, maple, and willow
- Calico scale on a variety of landscape trees
- Fletcher scale on arborvitae, yew, and other conifers
- Cottony maple scale on maples and other shade trees
Different scale species prefer different host plants, which is one reason proper identification is important before deciding how to manage the problem.
Why Scale Insects Can Be Difficult to Spot
One reason scale insects become such a persistent issue is that they blend in so well with the plant.
Many species resemble small bumps or natural textures on bark and stems. Others produce waxy or cottony coverings that may look like part of the plant itself. Because of this, infestations can go unnoticed for long periods of time.
In many cases, homeowners notice the effects before they ever notice the insect.
Signs of a Scale Problem
While the insects themselves can be difficult to spot, their activity often leaves clues. Common symptoms of scale infestations include:
- Sticky residue on leaves or surfaces below the plant
- Black sooty mold growing on leaves or branches
- Yellowing or thinning foliage
- Reduced plant vigor or branch dieback
The sticky residue, called honeydew, is produced by certain types of scale insects as they feed. This sugary substance can coat leaves, patio furniture, walkways, and even cars parked beneath affected trees.
Sooty mold fungi often grow on this honeydew, leaving leaves and branches with a dark, blackened appearance.
What Damage Can Scale Insects Cause?
Scale insects feed by sucking sap from trees and shrubs. Over time, that feeding can weaken the plant and interfere with healthy growth.
Depending on the species and the severity of the infestation, scale damage can lead to yellowing leaves, reduced vigor, twig or branch dieback, premature leaf drop, and overall decline. Some scale insects also produce honeydew, which can lead to black sooty mold on leaves and branches. In heavier infestations, plants may become more stressed and more vulnerable to other insect, disease, or environmental problems.

There may also be a second management window later in the season when scale insects are in the crawler stage. For many species, that period often falls between mid-May and July, when the insects are more vulnerable and easier to target. The exact timing can vary depending on the scale species and host plant, which is why proper identification and monitoring matter.
Healthy plants are also better able to tolerate and recover from pest pressure, which is why proper pruning, soil health, and overall plant care all play an important role in long-term plant health.
